Modern Rock-Strikers

Moses made but one mistake in his life that God ever recognized publicly. He failed to sanctify God "In the eyes of the children of Israel" when he struck the rock after God had told him to speak to it (Num. 20:7-12). In an earlier time, God had required Moses to smite the rock (Exod. 17:6), but on this later occasion a different action was required to sanctify God. Many people are walking today in the only wrong path Moses ever trod.

Once God required the lighting of lamps, or candles, (Exod. 27:20-21), but no more. Once God required the wearing of special clothing for those who served the congregation (Exod. 28), but no more. Once God required the keeping of special days during the year (Num. 28-29), but no more (Gal. 4:9-11). Once God required the playing of man-made instruments of music (Psa. 150), but no more (Eph. 5:19).

For his course of action Moses was refused entry into the promised land (Num. 27:12-14). That journey of Moses and the children of Israel through the desert of Sinai is a type (shadow or symbolic) of our journey through the spiritual wilderness of this earthly life. Accordingly their promised land, Canaan, is a type of the land God has promised us: Heaven (Heb. 3-4).

If you are one who is following Moses' sinful walk, you can be sure that you will likewise reach his disappointing end. You need to know God's specific instructions for you in the time in which you are living. Rightly divide the word (II Tim. 2:15), and observe it with your whole heart (Psa. 119:34).
