As far back as history records there have been people who claimed the power of miraculous healing – and where the claim is, there have been people who believe it.

Watching old movies, we laugh at the gullibility of people who fell for staged “healings”, and bought the “patent medicines” of the traveling peddler. But even among us there are Christians today who can't get past the seeming power of “faith healers”.

It's true that there are simple cures for some annoying ailments. People who don't know them might think that those who do know are possessed with some miraculous insight. But don't be fooled by those who claim to heal by the miracle power of God. It isn't happening.

It cannot be denied that healing by the direct power of God was one of the gifts in the first century of the church. What must be understood and remembered is that those gifts were given for a specific purpose, and for a specific time. The purpose of the miracle was to authenticate the preaching of the God-sent evangelists (Mark 16:20; Hebrews 2:3-4). Miraculous gifts continued to guide the church while the church didn't have the written New Testament (Ephesians 4:8-13). From the beginning, God's plan was that the miracles should cease when that word was confirmed and written for world-wide distribution (I Corinthians 13:9-10). When all of “the doctrine of the Lord” (Acts 13:12) was finally given and written, there remained no purpose for miracles. Nobody is healing by miracle today. Don't be a victim of a spiritual “snake old salesman.”
