- Today we will introduce the Sermon by considering the THEME and the CONTENT
The Theme

- Matt. 3:1-3 - The preaching of John the Baptist
- Preparing the way of the Lord
- Said the kingdom of heaven is at hand
- Matt. 4:17 - The preaching of Jesus

- Matt. 5:19 - “...shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven”
- Matt. 5:19 - “...shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven”

- Matt. 6:10 - “Your kingdom come”

- Therefore, the theme of The Sermon on the Mount is: “The Gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven.”

The Kingdom of Heaven
- Different than the kingdom of God?
- Comparison of different accounts show they are one and the same:
- Matt. 4:17 - “of heaven” / Mark 1:14, 15 - “of God”
- Matt. 5:3 - “of heaven” / Luke 6:20 - “of God”
- Matt. 13:31 - “of heaven” / Mark 4:30, 31 - “of God”
- Matthew nearly always uses “kingdom of heaven,” while others used “kingdom of God”
- One possible explanation of this is that Matthew wrote to a Jewish audience:
- The Jews were opposed to using the name of God (out of reverence)
- The Jews also had a misconception about the kingdom of God
- They were looking for an earthly, physical kingdom
- The use of the word “heaven” would emphasize a spiritual quality
- Involves several related concepts
- Godʼs kingship, rule, or recognized sovereignty
- Luke 17:20, 21 - Kingdom is not with observation, it is within you
- Matt. 6:10 - Your kingdom come, Your will be done
- It is spiritual in nature
- John 18:36 - Not of this world (not physical)
- Rom. 14:17 - Not eating and drinking, but righteousness, joy, and peace in the Holy Spirit
- It is visible on earth in the form of the church
- The church consists of those who have obeyed the gospel
- Rom. 6:17 - They had obeyed that form of doctrine
- Acts 2:38, 47 - Repent and be baptized... added to the church
- The church is referred to as the kingdom of God
- Matt. 16:18 - Build my church... keys of the kingdom
- Rev. 1:4, 6, 9 - Churches of Asia were considered part of the kingdom
- Those under the kingship of God here will enjoy it in the next life for eternity
- 2 Pet. 1:11 - An entrance administered into the everlasting kingdom
- Rev. 14:13 - Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on
Conclusion
- The exhortation to enter the kingdom is to you
- Matt. 7:13, 14 - Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction...
- John 3:5 - You must be born again of water and Spirit
- The exhortation to continue in the kingdom is to you
- Matt. 7:24 - Hear the sayings and do them (continue in them)
