The Consequences of Sin - 1 Samuel 4

Introduction

  1. In the first 3 chapters of this book we've seen the rise of the prophet Samuel.
  2. In Chapter 4 we can see the fulfilment of his first prophecy. Ch. 3:11 against the house of Eli
  3. During this time Israel was still under the yoke of the Philistines
  4. Sampson had only begun to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Jg. 12:5
  5. Beginning in chapter 4 there is a battle and Israel is defeated by the Philistines. (4,000 lost)
  1. Bring the Ark Vs 3-5

    1. Improper view of God
    2. Improper view of the ark
  2. The Battle ensues Vs. 6-10

    1. Philistines are afraid as they had heard of the plagues of Egypt.
    2. The purpose of miracles. Josh. 4:24
    3. They stand and fight anyway. Vs. 9-10 (30,00 Israelites fell)
  3. Prophecy is fulfilled Vs. 11-18

    1. Both of Eli's sons die in one day. Ch. 2:30-34
    2. As spoken to Samuel Ch. 3:11
    3. Eli dies. Vs 18
    4. Sorrow even at the birth of a son. Vs. 19-22

Conclusion

  1. Sin has consequences.
  2. God's promises are true and He is just.
  3. We must learn from history and remember that God is working things out according to His will. Rom. 15:4; 8:28
