The Consequences of Sin - 1 Samuel 4

Introduction
- In the first 3 chapters of this book we've seen the rise of the prophet Samuel.
- In Chapter 4 we can see the fulfilment of his first prophecy. Ch. 3:11 against the house of Eli
- During this time Israel was still under the yoke of the Philistines
- Sampson had only begun to deliver Israel from the Philistines. Jg. 12:5
- Beginning in chapter 4 there is a battle and Israel is defeated by the Philistines. (4,000 lost)
Bring the Ark Vs 3-5
- Improper view of God
- Improper view of the ark
The Battle ensues Vs. 6-10
- Philistines are afraid as they had heard of the plagues of Egypt.
- The purpose of miracles. Josh. 4:24
- They stand and fight anyway. Vs. 9-10 (30,00 Israelites fell)
Prophecy is fulfilled Vs. 11-18
- Both of Eli's sons die in one day. Ch. 2:30-34
- As spoken to Samuel Ch. 3:11
- Eli dies. Vs 18
- Sorrow even at the birth of a son. Vs. 19-22
Conclusion
- Sin has consequences.
- God's promises are true and He is just.
- We must learn from history and remember that God is working things out according to His will. Rom. 15:4; 8:28
